I bought my original DW505 as a rebuild from a tool show at the local Guard Armory in 1997. I have definitely over bit the chuck by more than a half inch in concrete on numerous occasions. The 505 takes it and keeps going. Finally, I wore the chuck pawls down so far that they would not clamp a bit. Went to change the chuck but, I could not get it off. Amazon was running a killer deal on the 505K with the case and roughly the same price I paid for the recon 10 years ago. Say what you will about the plastic gear case. It has never been an issue for me. A thoroughly excellent drill that I would buy again. Obviously, because I did! Amazon's shipping rocks. I have yet to overpay vs. the big boxes. I was within one minute of purchasing this saw and when I asked to purchase a plywood blade. None are available from Makita or any other blade manufacturer. The only saw blade that is available is the multipurpose blade that comes with the saw. The arbor size is 5/8 inch, which does NOT match the 3/8 inch of DeWalt saw blades of this diameter (5-3/8 inch). The dealer did not stock any replacement blades. The DeWalt blades do not fit. So buying any replacement saw blades would be a special order, not the story you want to here when you are in the middle of a project and need a saw blade now.

On the plus side, this saw is light weight, well balanced, with very comfortable hand grips. If only replacement saw blades were available readily and in multiple types.

One caution, a saw blade of this diameter, 5-3/8 inch cannot cut through a 2x4 (1.5 inches) in one pass if the saw is set at a 45 degree miter. So this small of a saw blade is strictly a plywood and paneling saw, not for framing lumber cut at 45 degree.

I am not sure why Makita has chosen such a odd arbor size of 5/8 inch vs. every other manufacturer's 3/8 inch arbor for saw blades of this size.

If not for the blade limitations this saw would have been mine and in my workshop.

I opted instead for the 6-1/2 Makita cordless saw, model no. BSS610. 6-1/2 inch diameter saw blades are manufactured by almost every blade and saw manufacturer and are available in every type (framing, plywood, etc....). So I own a slightly larger and heavier saw that I can buy replacement blades for at any hardware store. Another plus, is a 6-1/2 inch diameter saw blade when set at 45 degrees cuts up to 1-9/16 inches, so cutting a 2x4 at 45 degrees in one pass is a winner.

I have used longest 9/16 staples, and they could not punch together 1/4 plywood and 1/2 MDF. The bearingly punched 1/4 plywood through, forget about the MDF.

I could use it or P301 for running staples around loose upholstery on your chair or sofa. BUT I would not use it for lumber work: wood, hardwood, plywood, or MDF. Too weak! Use compressor staplers instead.

It works ok if you have small jobs, but if you're doing lots of fence work or cement board you'll probably regret buying this thing as I did... The battery doesn't last long at all and as it starts to loose power you'll find yourself having to use more and more force to drive screws... The obvious option would be to change the battery, but your first battery hasn't finished charging. So unless you plan on having at least 3 batteries and two chargers for this tool at your jobsite or are doing small jobs, you'd probably want to consider the corded version...

I purchased this drill/driver to serve as a cordless screw driver. In that capacity it's fantastic, it's got plenty of power to drive screws and the battery is large enough that it lasts me all day. It's small and light and the pressure sensitive trigger is a must.



It is not, however, in any way usable as a drill. It doesn't have the power and really struggles even going through a stud. When I need to drill I still pull out my real cordless drill: DEWALT DC730KA Heavy-Duty Cordless 14.4-Volt Compact Drill/Driver.



I don't even mind the built in battery given how long it lasts when using it as a screw driver.

I use this drill every day. I actually have several on the site along with a lot of other DW 18volt tools. You could definitely say that a lighter model like the 14volt DeWalt is more convenient for drywalling. And the hammerdrill function is only useful for very light work, like drilling the occasional anchor hole in brick. It is absolutely not a substitute for a real hammerdrill, even a small one like the Bosch bulldog. Nonetheless, it's very handy to have a drill like this in your holster. It can do 95% of what you need if you're doing basic residential home construction or remodeling. If you're a hobbyist, you could probably go with a lighter model, but this one really takes a beating. I abuse it - use it for things that I shouldn't, like running a mixing paddle for thinset - but it still runs straight and clean, handles finish work well. It's just a well-made tradesman's standby. I don't see how you could go wrong with it.

I bought this combo for a kitchen remodel job and love it. Tools are solid, and the batteries last forever! Seriously, the charges on the Lithium Ion batteries last longer than any other technology I've ever owned. I have had Milwaukee, Makita, Porter Cable etc. all with NiCad or NiMh batteries - but this set outlasts them all! The other NiCad batteries only lasted a few years before you had to buy replacements, which cost as much as the tool itself. With a lifetime warranty on both the tools AND the batteries, how can you go wrong? As for the other reviewer saying these are heavy, I guess that depends on your point of reference...my Porter Cable circular is a tank and weighs as much, so these feel feather light by comparison, they are very powerful and have solid construction that should test Ridgid's LIFETIME WARRANTY! BTW, mine came with a snazzy 45 degree twisting Compact Florescent Light (CFL) rather than the light pictured here. The light is free-standing and should last 20 years at least. I have not had an opportunity to use the drill on any large projects that would test the 3AH batteries full capacity, but the drill has been fantastic for the smaller projects that I have taken on. Great balance, raw torque to who laid the chunk, torque control that is surgical grade, high AH Lith Ion batteries and the four range speed control make the DS14DL the perfect choice for private or professional use. And the work light, I thought it would be more of a gimmick, boy was I wrong! The work light is the third hand we all have been looking for. I did a lot of leg-work in selecting this drill and I am 100% satisfied with the DS14DL.

I really dig makita tools and have almost exclusivly makita and milwaukee gear. I am a genuine tool junkie and if I dont have one you dont need it. I was amazed when I saw this thing and really bought it almost as a novelty,I mean this is real toolman bling bling. You dont have everything until you have a cordless powerhack..chuckle chuckle....but this buddie came and no sooner arived than I had uses for it. pipe..rebar..locks..angle iron... you name it, a lot of jobs I ordinarily grab a sawzall and a metal blade for can be done with a lot more finess with this saw and it seems to have plenty of power for long enough.The l.e.d light is a nice touch as well. I gotta give Makita 5 blings for coming up with this one....So after you have everything else....

I bought two of these kits and the discount is hefty but at a price. Both kits lacked the depth rod, one lacked the side clip, both lacked the white plastic covers for the spare batteries, and one kit had a defective battery charger. Other than that the drill kits were as advertised.



Drill performance is adequate for most jobs and adjusting the speed range and hammer and driver modes is easy to do. The chucks tighten easily to hold even small drill bits but with vibration the chucks will loosen and you need to stop and retighten them.



Drill torque is average for 18 volt drills, better than the 450 in. lb. models but not in the same league as the Milwaukee 2611 much less the DeWalt DCD940 and DCD970 drills. This lower torque is compounded by the lack of a 3-speed gear box like the top of the line DeWalt drills. Strange that the manufacturers make lower powered cordless drills but do not see the need to provide more gear range options to compensate (other than DeWalt and Ridgid).



Battery charge time is good but Makita recommends a 60 minute cool down period after charging so for maximum battery life a 90 minute recharge time is evidently required.

The 3 Ah batteries do not have recessed contacts so the plastic covers are important for the spares. Holes per charge is average for 18 volt drills with full size batteries.



The Makita drills are lighter than comparable drills from DeWalt and a lot of that is the result of a lighter battery. The Makita 3 Ah battery weighs about 22 oz. while the DeWalt XRP batteries weigh 37 oz. or nearly a full pound more. The DeWalt battery's weight is offset by being able to deliver more power to the drill motor for heavy duty use and it provides a lot more holes per charge.



With lithium-ion drills I have read that they will not provide as much peak power as a NiCad and that has been my experience as well. I tend to just buy the next size up and get a drill with a higher power or torque rating and this works well most of the time.



The side handle that Makita makes is my favorite in that it locks in any position and is smooth to tighten compared to the DeWalt design. It is not as long as the handle that Milwaukee provides with the 2611 drills but it is also not limited to 90 degrees like the Milwaukee side handle. Makita does not provide a home for the side handle in the case which it not at all unusual. Only Milwaukee take the trouble to create a carry case that holds everything for each kit instead of taking the one size fits all that Makita, Hitachi, DeWalt, and others take. For attention to the details Milwaukee has a sizable lead over its competitors. For driving and drilling power the DeWalt drills are the best available.



Something that Makita used to do is not have holes at the back of the drill where your hand will cover the cooling vents. With their newer drills the venting was changed and now it is very easy to cover the vents and cut the cooling of the motor by half. Something to take note of when using the drill with both hands. When I am making holes in stucco I find myself using both hands with one hand on the back of the drill to add pressure. The new Blue Boar TCT hole cutters for stucco and wood make short work of the stucco or brick but a bit of pressure is needed to cut through the plywood and a second hand helps.

I expect that the drills will hold up well based on my experience with other Makita cordless tools but that experience may not be typical for the brand. I would not recommend the reconditioned kits from Makita unless you have time to deal with their customer support people to get missing items or replace defective ones.

The product arrived pretty much instantly. However this is an extrememly badly constructed offshore item. Upon trying to use it for even light duty it did not do the job. The clutch spun and the drill stopped over and over again (with the hammer drill which came with the item). This was old cheezy concrete that should have been drilled into like a hot poker going into butter. Shortly therafter the drill fell apart -- plastic pieces broke off the handle and the screws came out. I couldn't even get through one small job using it. I would not recommend it for even light duty by a homeowner.

I usually only use a drill to drill holes, and this one works great for that, but recently I found myself having to back out some large bolts, and I couldn't budge them by hand. I put the Phillips bit in and went at it nice and slow. Sure enough, I got them out, and without stripping the head. The variable speed feature was very helpful with this, as was the torque adjustment.



Aside from this, the drill is light, and the handle and trigger are comfortable to use. The cord is a reasonable length, and the carrying case is nice. The only thing I wish it had was a level. Given the other aspects, I'll get over this. If I feel really ambitious, I'll put one in the bit holder and just stash the bits somewhere else.

Rust? Sure, there's a little rust on the tip after a year of outdoor use, but it's never affected my work. I'm not making food with it!



If I had to complain, I might say it's a little heavy, but that's what you would expect from a half inch drill. The 18V Dewalt hammer drill and the corded half inch Miluakee Magnum drill are both almost twice as heavy as this one.



Of all the drills I've used (including a 12V Makita), this is the one I like to use the most because it has so much versatility. If you don't have a drill, this would be the one to get.

I have some friends who do industrial work and they have some higher end tools like SK and some that are only known by the pros. For a average home user who has a shop, this is more than enough and won't break the bank.



Be warned, after a while, it will take a toll on your hands and arms - do wear gloves and eye protection and make sure your chisels are installed correctly as this is a tool for professionals or people that have learned from the school of hard knocks.

The first time I picked up the Bosch I found that it fit my hand like a glove with its new handle design. The people at Bosch did a great job of designing a drill that feels like it is lighter than it is and yet provides a reported 650 inch pounds of torque. How much power these drills really deliver is another story but the Bosch 37618 (clever naming) is definitely in the same power league as the DeWalt DCD970 and the Milwaukee 2611.



The drill chuck is the best I have seen with any drill I have used over the past 20 years by a wide margin. There is absolutely no runout and in operation it feels smooth as silk. It holds bits very well and does not loosen with vibration which is a problem I have experienced with the Hitachi drill chucks and to a lesser degree the Makita chucks.



The side handle can be positioned anywhere that works the best and this is important to me as I often am using the the drill in a tight space where the side handle cannot be straight out from the side. Makita and DeWalt has also stuck with this design and as the saying goes if it ain't broke don't fix it.



The lithium batteries provide a lot of charge and are above average in performance. Bosch like everyone else also makes half size batteries but in my experience in high torque use the smaller batteries last about 1/4 as long for some reason. Recharge time is average which is an area where too much emphasis is placed anyway. Faster charges with NiCad and NiMh batteries shortened their life dramatically so charging a lithium ion battery in half the time as claimed by some like Makita, may not be good for the health of the batteries which are not cheap to replace.



Torque is very good with the low speed high torque setting and is great for most situations but not all. When using a medium to large hole cutter a medium torque and speed range setting (as provided by DeWalt with the DCD970) is usually the best in terms of speed and clean cutting without a lot of power cutouts. Lithium ion battery packs cut power to the motor when they sense to much draw is occurring. When this happens if feels like the clutch is slipping severely and the drill chatters. This is quite apparent with the Milwaukee 2601 and the consumer grade Makita BDF452HW drills and the Hitachi drills we have.



With cordless there are more things to consider than with a corded drill and when you add lithium ion batteries to the mix the actual power on the job to the drill bit varies a great deal between the different drills we use. Driving screws or drilling small holes in masonry and the difference is hard to notice and a lightweight 18v or even a 12v drill may get it done. When boring large 3" to 6" holes in wood or masonry the top of the line drills like the Bosch 37618 are the best tool for the job if you want to use a cordless lithium ion powered drill.



My guys saw a big difference in drill performance when we switched first to using the Milwaukee Big Hawg hole cutters and then later to the Blue Boar TCT hole cutters. They could cut a hole more than twice as large but they had to pay more attention to drill speed and the torque setting. This Bosch is capable of making 6" holes in thick plywood and even in brick veneer on OSB when used with the right hole cutter. If you instead use self feed bits or bi-metal hole saws your results will suffer along with the drill speed and the number or holes per battery charge will be a whole lot less.

This is one drill that you need to go to a store and pickup and feel its heft in your hand and if possible run the drill and you will want one whether you actually need a new drill. If choosing another lighter and lower power lithium ion powered drill be aware that lithium adds to the potential power available but it also reduces significantly the peak power available to the drill motor. In high torque = high current draw situations the difference will be most noticeable and have the greatest impact on drill performance. Best to have as much power as you can find in an 18 volt drill if you want one drill you can use for everything. This Bosch is one of very few that I can unreservedly recommend.

I bought this with some hesitation based on the other reviews. And it's delivered accordingly. The instructions are useless, but luckily its a drill, so there's not much to figure out. The parts list is in German, so I'll need to find another one once I need parts. And I'm pretty certain I will. It came with an extra set of brushes, and the fact it started to smoke and smell of burning plastic/rubber after a few tapcon holes, I figured I wouldn't need to keep track of them for long.



Everything about it screams cheap, but for $60, what do you expect? Hundreds for a better one that will last, weighed against running this one into the ground left me with the decision to buy this one. I have a building I'm rehabbing, and if it makes it through all the concrete work I need to do, I'll be pleased. So far the brushes haven't burnt through, but I feel it a good idea to 'brush up' on my German nonetheless.



I wish they'd just send a drill in a case and knock off $5. The crappy goggles, gloves, bits, dab of grease - why? I haven't used the bits that came with it, and am a bit afraid to since this drill doesn't have any kind of clutch to keep your wrist/arm from breaking if the bit gets jammed or breaks.



Cheap hammer drill for cheap. So far, it's doing its job. It's got the power if it doesn't burn up.

I vaguely remember using those new fangled pistol grip drills for

something, along with first some spade bits, then some auger bits.

I got tired of waiting for batteries to recharge, so I got some

selfeed bits, and then drills started breaking and chucks started wobbling.



I picked up a hole hawg for a song. I looked like it had

been drug behind a truck and then used in the yard for a while. The

handles were missing, the cord was shot, but it ran.



After drilling umpteen holes for PEX tubing in joists, it's

still running with no problems, new handles, and a new cord.

It's been lent to friends, even the ones that already own new fangled

28V XRPM super titanium wireless LED cordless drills.



This is a quality tool. The aluminum holes on mine are even helicoiled.

There isn't a hint of wobble in the big jacobs chuck after all

the abuse it's been through. All the same, milwaukee makes

replacement parts cheap and easy. My Milwaukee drills are the

ones that have never needed switch or chuck replacements.



This is a heavy tool. You're not going to use it to shoot drywall

screws on the ceiling. You could, but you're a girly man.



This can be a dangerous tool. everyone has at least one story

about that new guy that got spun around and around 3 stories up

off the scaffold.



Remember to never never use the high torque (low) setting without a

pipe (it takes 3/4 steel threaded pipe) BRACED against something.

If it isn't braced, its going to turn around, smack everything in

its path, and pin the smackee against the next solid object.



Remember to hold it so that it will pull away from you, especially

when you use it in low without a brace.
